NDIS Psychology Explained: Plan-Managed vs Self-Managed

If your child has an NDIS plan and you have been staring at terms like "plan-managed," "self-managed" and "NDIA-managed" wondering what any of it actually means for booking a psychologist, you are not alone. Parents searching "NDIS psychologist near me" or "NDIS child psychology Gold Coast" often tell us the funding side of things feels more confusing than the therapy itself. This guide breaks it down in plain language, so you can work out what applies to your family and what it means for choosing a provider.

Mindaras Psychology Clinic is based in Helensvale and supports children and families across the Northern Gold Coast, including Coomera, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Hope Island, Upper Coomera, Ormeau and Nerang. NDIS-funded psychology is a regular part of what we help families navigate, so we wanted to lay out exactly how it works.

The Three Ways an NDIS Plan Can Be Managed

Every NDIS participant's plan is managed in one of three ways, and this choice affects which providers a family can use.

NDIA-managed (agency-managed). The National Disability Insurance Agency pays providers directly, and claims are submitted through the myplace portal. This is the most hands-off option for families, but it comes with a significant restriction: only NDIS-registered providers can be used (Plan Partners, 2026). There is no invoicing or reimbursement admin for the family to manage, but provider choice is limited to the registered network.

Plan-managed. A separate plan manager, funded through your NDIS plan at no extra cost to you, handles invoices and payments on your behalf. Crucially, plan management allows you to use both NDIS-registered and non-registered providers, giving families considerably more choice (Plan Partners, 2026). The provider sends the invoice to your plan manager, who checks and pays it from your funding. This is often described as the option that offers the best balance of flexibility and low admin burden for families (MD Home Care, 2026).

Self-managed. The family manages the funding directly. You pay the provider yourself, then submit the invoice through the myNDIS participant portal for reimbursement, which typically takes a matter of days (Plan Partners, 2026). Like plan management, self-management allows you to choose from registered or non-registered providers and to agree on services directly with them (Plan Partners, 2026). It offers the most flexibility, but also the most responsibility, including keeping records and receipts for compliance.

Why This Matters When Choosing a Psychologist

Here is the part that catches a lot of parents out. If your child's plan is NDIA-managed, you are restricted to NDIS-registered providers only. If your plan is plan-managed or self-managed, you have the freedom to choose a provider based on fit, experience and availability, whether or not that provider is formally registered with the NDIS (Plan Partners, 2026).

Mindaras is not currently an NDIS-registered provider, so if your child's plan is NDIA-managed, we are unfortunately not able to see you under that arrangement. However, we are able to see children and families whose plans are plan-managed or self-managed, since both of these options allow families to choose non-registered providers (Plan Partners, 2026). If you are not sure how your child's plan is set up, your plan manager or support coordinator can tell you, or you can check the myNDIS participant portal.

What Does NDIS Psychology Actually Cost?

Psychology sits within a participant's Capacity Building budget, most commonly under Improved Daily Living, and the National Disability Insurance Agency sets a maximum hourly price limit that applies to plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants. As of 1 July 2026, the national maximum rate for psychology is $252.99 per hour, an increase from the previous $232.99 rate, and notably the only allied health therapy to receive a price rise in the 2026-27 schedule (Medical Marketing Group, 2026). This rate applies uniformly across every state and territory, with higher amounts applying in remote and very remote areas (Medical Marketing Group, 2026).

It is worth understanding that this published figure is a maximum limit, not a fixed fee every provider must charge. Providers can charge up to this amount, and pricing may vary depending on session length, report writing, and other factors. If you are self-managed, you have room to negotiate rates directly with your provider, since price limits are less rigidly enforced outside the plan-managed and NDIA-managed categories.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Travel and report writing are billed separately. Under the 2026-27 pricing changes, psychology services were "unbundled," meaning travel time and non-face-to-face work such as report writing are now separate line items rather than folded into the hourly rate (Medical Marketing Group, 2026). It's worth asking your provider how they structure these costs so there are no surprises to your plan's budget.

Not every plan is the same. Some families' plans list psychology as a "stated support," meaning the funding is specifically ring-fenced for therapy and cannot be redirected elsewhere in the plan. Your support coordinator or plan manager can clarify how your particular plan is structured.

You can switch how your plan is managed. If you started out NDIA-managed and are finding provider choice too limited, you are generally able to request a change to plan-managed or self-managed at your next plan review, or sometimes sooner. This is worth raising with your planner or support coordinator if provider access has been a barrier for your family.

Why Timely, Well-Matched Support Matters

Getting the funding structure right is not just an administrative detail. It directly affects how quickly a child can access appropriate support, and timing matters. Research on childhood trauma and related difficulties consistently shows that earlier intervention is associated with better long-term outcomes, while delays in accessing appropriate support are linked to a greater risk of more entrenched difficulties later on (Chen et al., 2018). Understanding your plan management options upfront, rather than after weeks of confusion, can meaningfully shorten the time between recognising a need and your child actually starting therapy.
