How to Choose a Psychologist: Questions to Ask Before Booking

Looking for a psychologist near you on the Gold Coast? Choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of clinics, a confusing mix of titles (psychologist, clinical psychologist, counsellor, therapist), and no real way to know if it will help until you are already in the room. This guide sets out what to ask before you book, so you can make the choice with some confidence instead of guesswork.

At Mindaras Psychology Clinic in Helensvale, we get asked versions of these questions often, by families and individuals across the Northern Gold Coast, including Coomera, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Hope Island and Ormeau. Below are the questions worth asking any psychologist before your first session, along with what a good answer tends to sound like.

Why the right fit matters more than you'd think

It's tempting to assume therapy works purely because of the technique used, CBT for anxiety, EMDR for trauma, and so on. The research tells a more layered story. A synthesis of 295 studies covering more than 30,000 clients found a consistent link between the strength of the therapeutic relationship and treatment outcomes, and this held across therapy types, client presentations, and both face-to-face and online formats (Flückiger et al., 2018). A related task force review commissioned by the American Psychological Association concluded that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most consistently supported predictors of whether therapy actually helps (Norcross & Lambert, 2011).

Put simply, who you see and how well you connect with them matters almost as much as what they do in the room. That's part of why choosing a psychologist deserves more thought than picking the first name that shows up in a search, and why the questions below are worth asking.

1. Are you registered, and what are your qualifications?

In Australia, the title "psychologist" is legally protected. Anyone using it must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) through the Psychology Board of Australia, having completed accredited university training and supervised practice (Psychology Board of Australia, n.d.). Some psychologists also hold endorsement in a specific area of practice, such as clinical psychology, which requires further postgraduate training.

What to listen for: a clear, confident answer, and a psychologist willing to explain their specific training rather than a vague "yes, of course."

At Mindaras, our team holds current AHPRA registration and a range of specialised qualifications and endorsements. We're upfront with clients about our training and areas of focus, and you can read about our team's backgrounds on our website before you book.

2. Do you use evidence-based approaches, and which ones?

Not all therapy is equal. Evidence-based practice means the psychologist draws on the best available research, combined with clinical expertise and your own values and circumstances (American Psychological Association, 2006). A good psychologist should be able to name the specific approaches they use, such as CBT, ACT, EMDR or play therapy, and explain briefly why that approach suits your situation.

What to listen for: specificity. "We tailor treatment based on the latest research and your individual needs" is a reasonable sign. A shrug is not.

Mindaras draws on a range of evidence-based approaches, including CBT, ACT and EMDR, selected and adapted for each client, whether that's a child, adolescent, adult or family.

3. Do you have experience with my specific concern?

Psychologists don't all specialise in the same things. Someone who is excellent with adult anxiety may have limited experience with childhood trauma, ADHD assessments or relationship counselling. It's a fair question to ask directly whether a psychologist has worked with concerns like yours before.

What to listen for: honesty. A good psychologist will tell you plainly if something is outside their usual scope and refer you elsewhere if needed.

Mindaras offers a broad range of services for children, adolescents, adults and families, including anxiety and mood support, trauma and EMDR therapy, ADHD and ASD assessments, and parenting support. It's worth asking what fits your situation when you get in touch.

4. What will the first session actually involve?

Not knowing what happens in a first appointment is one of the biggest reasons people put off booking at all. A good psychologist should be able to describe, in plain language, what an initial consultation looks like, including intake questions, goal setting, what's confidential, and roughly how many sessions might be involved before you review the plan together.

What to listen for: a clear, jargon-free explanation, not a vague "we'll just see how it goes."

Our team talks families and individuals through what to expect before their first Mindaras appointment, so there are no surprises walking in.

5. How do you track whether therapy is actually working?

Good therapy shouldn't be a leap of faith. Progress should be checked along the way. Formal client feedback and progress monitoring have been shown to more than double the likelihood of positive change and to reduce rates of client deterioration compared with therapy delivered without structured feedback (Norcross & Lambert, 2011). A psychologist who regularly checks how treatment is tracking, and adjusts the approach when needed, is following the evidence.

What to listen for: mention of regular check-ins, goal reviews or outcome measures, not just "we'll keep going until you feel better."

At Mindaras, treatment plans are reviewed together with clients, and with parents where the client is a child, so everyone knows what progress looks like and the approach can be adjusted along the way.

6. What are the costs, and do you offer Medicare rebates?

Cost is one of the most practical questions, and one people often avoid asking. Ask directly about session fees, whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan through your GP applies, what the Medicare rebate covers, and any gap payment. A transparent clinic should be able to answer this clearly without you having to dig for it.

What to listen for: straightforward numbers, upfront.

Mindaras is upfront about fees and can talk you through Medicare rebate eligibility and Mental Health Treatment Plans when you get in touch, so there are no surprises on the day.

7. How accessible is the clinic, in terms of location, appointment types and wait times?

Especially for families juggling school pick-ups, work and multiple appointments, logistics matter almost as much as clinical quality. Ask about clinic location, parking, telehealth availability and realistic wait times for a first appointment.

What to listen for: a clinic that fits into your life, not one you have to fight to get to.

Mindaras is based in Helensvale, a central and easy location for families across the Northern Gold Coast, including Coomera, Upper Coomera, Pacific Pines, Oxenford, Hope Island, Runaway Bay and Nerang, with both in-person and telehealth options available.

8. Will I feel comfortable and understood?

This last one isn't really a question you ask out loud so much as something you pay attention to. Given how strongly the therapeutic relationship predicts outcomes (Flückiger et al., 2018), it's completely reasonable to change psychologists if the fit isn't right. That's not giving up, it's good practice.

What to listen for: warmth, curiosity, and a genuine interest in your (or your child's) individual story, rather than a generic script.

Mindaras takes an individually tailored, warm and culturally aware approach with every client, because real progress starts with feeling genuinely heard.
